does any body know if GMO’s(genecticly modified ogranisms) are good or bad for you…maybe a chart on one???

its kinda for a project and im despirate…plz anyone i just need something…thanks=)

Well GMO products have been frequently linked to health risks. There’s a link between GMO foods and allergies, even to antibiotic resistance.

Here’s a really interesting quote:

"In recent years health professionals have become alarmed by the increasing number of bacterial strains that are showing resistance to antibiotics. Bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics by creating antibiotic resistance genes through natural mutation. Biotechnologists use antibiotic resistance genes as selectable markers when inserting new genes into plants. In the early stages of the process scientists do not know if the target plant will incorporate the new gene into its genome. By attaching the desired gene to an antibiotic resistance gene the new GM plant can be tested by growing it in a solution containing the corresponding antibiotic. If the plant survives scientists know that it has taken up the antibiotic resistance gene along with the desired gene. There is concern that bacteria living in the guts of humans and animals could pick up an antibiotic resistance gene from a GM plant before the DNA becomes completely digested (GEO-PIE website)."

Here is a whole list of archived articles about risks from eating, cultivating or otherwise having GMO crops and food available to people:

http://www.biotech-info.net/health_risks.html

This is just a University of Michigan sponsored short snippet of an article about GMO health risks:

http://sitemaker.umich.edu/africa.gmo/health

And of course, there’s always the environmental effects of GMO:

http://www.environmentalcommons.org/gmo-impacts.html

This article is in itself not on the most unbiased of sites, but they do back their words with some great research links, some of which ARE from very reliable sources.

Just keep an eye out on sources and what the bias is. Also, take anything sponsored by a company called Monsanto with a HUGE grain of salt because Monsanto is a major player in the GMO arena and has a lot of interest in making sure people believe GMO crops are safe.

Planet Diversity 01 – Message from Polish Farmers

Planet Diversity calls upon the friends and guardians of diversity on this planet to join them in celebrating the natural and cultural diversity of life in food and agriculture. For five days, during the negotiations of the UN-Convention on Biodiversity, they discussed how farmers, consumers, food producers and their communities can cooperate. A global movement from different directions came together for the common cause of defending diversity against destructive and threatening tendencies in agriculture, rural development and food production.

On May 12th representatives from more than 190 countries around the world were guests in Germany, negotiating about species extinction and genetic engineering, the control of seeds, over protected areas and agricultural diversity. To show the representatives what diversity means, this demonstration took place.

This video shows the speech of a representative from Polish Farmers who successful oppose GMO in their country.

What is South Africa’s stance on potential risks of genetically modified foods?

How does the government feel about it? Do they want to keep producing GM foods? What’s their opinion?

Dear, South Africa has mostly natural foods (not all) but our shelves are filled with decent goods of high quality. I can buy fresh fruits and veggies all the time, anywhere. I remember my American cousin visiting us some years ago. We went shopping and he commented on how "small" our fruits and veggies were. He has never seen that before. I already knew that he was used to genetically modified artificial goods that LOOK big and fresh but are totally tasteless. He thought that fruits that are small are unnatural. I explained to him that it was completely the other way around. Needless to say, he tasted REAL fruits and veggies for the first and was thoroughly impressed.

I can speak a bit about American and SOME European countries. The meats make me sick. It’s tremendously tampered with and does NOT taste like meat. Although, people are SO used to it the think it’s normal.

America is big on GM foods it’s not even funny. Of course, there are culprits in SA too. But I hope to God it never gets out of hand like in the US. Everything is SO commercial, there a THOUSANDS of different BRANDS of the SAME thing, yet none of these companies take time and effort in ensuring a high quality product. They in it for the money, produce the maximum at the minimum cost.

If ever it comes to the point that our shelves are stacked with artificial goods..I will protest. I am NOT eating kak! :)

Is there a cause or cure for 10 year old Rock Conure that is losing weight, strength, body muscle? GMO?

.. losing muscle in the chest area. I can now feel the chest bones — not much muscle tissue there now. This Conure has not been flying for years. Has been looked after by a top notch vet and has excellent food, including fattening-up supplements.

Eats Roudy Bush pellets, organic sunflower and organic hemp seed (prescribed by vet), nutriberries, fresh fruit and vegetables, mainly "conventional" and "non organic".

I’ve been reading a new health book ("The Unhealthy Truth" by Robyn O’Brien) for humans which claims that GMO produce kills lab animals relatively quickly.

Any information is appreciated.
The "wasting away" is happening very, very slowly to this 10-year old Conure.
It has been to a top-notch vet regularly and the vet has given up on looking for cause / cure / disease.

If you are already giving fattening-up supplements given by the vet and your bird is still losing weight then this is very serious and is more then just you need to feed him more kind of thing :)

Were you just seeing a regular vet?
I advise you go see an AVIAN vet right away. While regular vets are great for cats and dogs, when it comes to birds you really are best seeing an avian vet.
If your vet was an avian vet I would go to see a new vet and maybe get a second opinion.

Genetically modified foods ?

im doing a project on genetically modified foods, and i need help on the ethical perspective on it. help ? i have no idea what to put for that !
thanks, and more information would be awesome :)
oooooh, and, what is the political perspective ?

Its unethical because GM foods have been introduced into American foods without labelling, so US consumers (unlike in Europe, where GM food has to be labelled) are eating GM corn and GM soya without knowing and without being able to choose whether they want it or not. Given that a lot of animal studies have found indications of negative health effects, that’s pretty unpleasant and worrying.

It’s also unethical from the farmers’ perspective as their crops get contaminated with GM pollen from other farms and then, because the genes are patented under US law, the companies (eg. Monsanto) can sue them for lots of money! This has made it risky for famers not to grow GM crops. This is clearly ridiculous and terrible, but it has happened to over a hundred farmers in the US. See the report, ‘GM crops – the health effects, and another report ‘Seeds of Doubt’ about the farmers situation, both of which you can find on the Soil Association website.

What changes occur when foods are genetically modified?

I am doing a research paper about genetically modified foods, and i’m supposed to focus mostly on any chemical aspects, because this is a chemistry class. Does anyone know any chemistry related information about genetically modified foods i.e changes that happen to molecules or anything that’s a chemical change or focuses in on chemistry?
