How can a genetically modified organism provide a benefit for humans and a threat to a population?

Genetically modified organisms are usually modified to resist certain aspects of life that infected, affected or killed the original organism. This makes the genetically modified organism far more resistant to many environmental aspects that would neutralise the organism. This is how it is a threat – it breeds with similar organisms and passes on the genetic modifications to off-spring, and these aspects can mutate or wipe out the original organisms all together. they can also breed in large amounts and destroy other organisms with nothing to prevent them, as they are resistant to all attempts to stop them. humanity may also experience mild to adverse side-effects.

They can help humanity by serving a purpose – like genetically modified produce that is resistant to certain fungi or soil conditions to increase the crop yield to feed more people.

What is a genetically modified organism?

I need a straight forward definition to what a GMO is

an organism that has had its DNA altered through unnatural means such as selective breeding, gene insertion, deletion or manipulation.

Its important not to confuse the terms GMO and transgenic. All the food you eat is genetically modified.

What impact does genetically modified foods have on evolution?

please give a detailed answer and links would be very helpful as well.

Whoa…. this is a pretty vague question. If this is for school I hope its a higher ed class.

You’re really going to need to search some scientific journals on this one. …and even then you’re going to see the debate between legitimate scientists.

I think the best you’re going to get is useless generalities. For instance you could say that genetic alteration of food provides for more humans which would increase population and probably slow evolution.

However, if you could prove that it somehow increased mutations, then you could argue that modification actually increases evolutionary speed.

Just be careful, you’re probably going to find a bunch of psuedoscientific answers on the web.

Maybe go to pubmed

oops, did you mean evolution on the plants? my bad….

Genetic alteration of plants can lead to a uniform population which is very dangerous. If all the plants are exactly the same then they can all be wiped out with a single bug.

Diversity is essential to evolution, and to survival.

I haven’t done the research but supposedly this is currently happening with bananas.

is penicillin a genetically modified organism?

Yes,

A normal penicillin will not fight any infection.

Are you concerned about eating genetically modified foods? Irradiated foods?

In the US, there are no labeling laws required for irradiated foods and genetically modified (GM) foods. Most milk and dairy in the US contains genetically modified bovine growth hormones. Soy beans and corn are commonly GM foods. In the US at COSTCO, the greens and raw almonds are likely to be irradiated for shelf life. It scares me that the greens don’t deteriorate after a few weeks in the refrigerator. Just try to sprout those almonds, they are dead.

In Europe, GM foods and irradiated foods must be labeled and very few GM foods are sold.

Should we be afraid of eating GM foods? What about irradiation? Why or why not?

Yes, I’m concerned. Neither would appear to have any benefit to the consumer, but mean huge profits to agribusiness and big companies.

I recall that GM crops were claimed as a solution to world hunger, since they are modified in ways that make them resistant to disease, climate, pests etc and would produce higher yields. This hasn’t happened of course; multinational companies’ control over global food production has intensified and poor countries’ dependence on richer ones has increased.

Some quite recent research has shown that genetic modification actually cuts the productivity of crops; a study found that GM soya produces about 10% less food than conventional soya.

I don’t know much about irradiation, but the idea of food being irradiated to increase shelf life is abhorrent.

I live in the UK so can avoid genetically modified food; I didn’t realise the similar regulations about labelling weren’t in force in the US or that it was so widespread.

The safety of neither of these technologies has been proven. Yes, I’m concerned and I wouldn’t knowingly let either pass my lips.

Finding a song to go with a pro-gmo powerpoint?

I’m trying to find a good song to play in the background of a pro-GMO powerpoint presentation. It’s supposed to back up my argument while being slightly emotional. Any songs come to mind?

, "the reason"- hoobastank

Science Homework – Are you happy to eat Genetically modified foods?

We have a science essay to write
about if we are happy to eat Genetically Modified foods?

Please write your opinions and a reason why and also does any one know of any genetically modified foods and how its done?

Thanks
i mean DNA

I think you mean the "scary genetic lab" definition of GM foods. >.<

No, but I happily eat GM foods. It makes me neither happy nor sad; I am indifferent. Most of the corn I (and probably you) buy in the supermarket is GM- there are some easy tells if you know what to look for.

The only concern I have is that genetic modification by selective breeding tends to have less physiological consequences for the modified organism than would lab-modified organisms (due to the genes or triggers being modified).

How should I start my research paper’s conclusion about genetically modified foods?

I have explained the benefits and harms of Genetically modified food in my paper, along with information about the producers of it and other important topics. I don”t just want to restate my paper in the conclusion, I dislike this setup. Is there any other way I could do it?

I wrote a research paper/speech about GM food also, and in my conclusion I said things about buying it (whether you should or shouldn’t) and basically, how it can relate to everyday life.
Mine was a persuasive speech though, so if yours is purely informative, then include both sides/opinions in the conclusion.

What are the environmental pros for genetically modified foods?

I am doing a biology project on the effects of genetically modified foods, specifically the effects it has on the environment, and I am stuck on the pros. What are the pros for genetically modified foods concerning the environment? Any help would be great. Thanks!
I am doing a biology project on the effects of genetically modified foods and I am stuck on the pros. What are they and what do they mean? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Not all much good really! All it’ll do is initiate another evolutionary arms race between GMF species & its predators, which combined with global warming, will do nothing but further destabilize the whole environment,& add cloning to all that,U would have nothing but an ecological catastrophe in the making!

What’s your opinion on GMOs?

So we’re talking about GMOs in class (biotechnical engineering) and i’m having a hard time making up my mind on them. While many GMOs are pest resistant, eliminating the need for pesticides, they still aren’t good in my opinion. They screw with biodiversity. There was another thing I heard about, where its possible for the pollen from these genetically modified organisms to be transferred (blow over) to innocent plants, killing good bugs, such as butterflies and bees. While my number one choice would be organic AND gmo free, I can’t decide which is better: GMO or pesticide.

what’s your take on this?

I have many of the same concerns. The biggest problem I see with them is the are proprietary and if they get cross pollinated with neighboring crops the land owner can be sued for copyright infringement. This has forced many farmers into financial ruin or forced them into growing an unwanted crop. Every food crop has a patent and many patent owners have caused the extinction of thousands of food crops. Lack of diversity could ultimately cause a food shortage.

Either way, I think they should be labeled so those of us who want to opt out can. The handful of corporations that hold the patents not only for the crop but for the pesticides that work with the crop have pressured our leaders into allowing them into products without labeling. It takes away our freedom of choice.
